Sir:
The charts of the West and Northwest coast of Corea being very imperfect, you will be very careful in taking and [recording] soundings as you approach that coast; and also determine the positions in Latitude and Longitude of the entrance of the River Phing-iang and of the Islands in the way, also of as much of the coast line as may come under your observation.
Report upon the same upon your return to Shanghai furnishing me with a diagram or chart embracing all these points. I trust you will not remain longer in Shanghai than is necessary for coaling.
