Sir,

Since I saw you upon the evening of the 20th I have decided to request you, when you have reached Corea, to remain there until the arrival of Admiral Willes. I have telegraphed to the Admiral that you will give Mr. Maude a passage on board the “Sheldrake” and until the Admiral does arrive, I am not sure that Mr. Maude will be able to find a lodging on shore. By letter received from Admiral Willes this morning, I am led to believe that he will meet the squadron at Nagasaki, and will proceed very shortly afterwards to Corea. You will not therefore be delayed long in any case.
Mr. Maude has a letter addressed to a Chinese Mandarin who is on board the “Wei-yuen” Chinese gunboat which should be lying off an island known as Kan-hua, or otherwise as Hu-tao, that is Tiger Island. This is at the mouth of the river called in Chinese Li Ho but by the Coreans …, how by them pronounced I cannot say. In the maps you will find Li Ho written Sa-erl or Sa-eull.
I am &c,

(Signed) T.F. Wade
