| Title | Northern Wall of the Eastern Auxiliary Chamber | ||
|---|---|---|---|
This is a detailed view of the well depicted on the northern wall of the eastern auxiliary chamber in Anak Tomb No. 3. As evidenced by the apparatus seen on the left side of the mural, water was efficiently drawn from wells using the principle of leverage rather than by hand. The apparatus is comprised of a thick wooden column and a long lever joined together at the top. The lever is connected by a flared dowel inserted through a hole in the column. A heavy bag hanging from the rod acts as the ballast that assists in drawing the water-filled bucket from the well. The bucket and lever are connected by a rope. The top of the rectangular bucket can be faintly seen inside the well. This image can be considered a valuable resource for reproducing Koguryo-era lever systems.
